Imposter syndrome

Cassandra Yazzie | MAY 15, 2024

“what am I doing here?”
“am I qualified to do this?”
“sooner or later they’re going to figure out that I’m not legit”

In the last week I felt Imposter syndrome. This is a condition of feeling unworthy, fear, anxiousness, self-doubt, and incompetence.

Apparently I’m not alone, 70% of adults may experience imposter syndrome at least once in their lifetime.

What triggers this?
*Calling to attention one’s success
*failure after multiple successes

I returned from my honeymoon to teaching only to be overcome with fear and inadequacy. I cried, not know if I was going to escape or how long I would be in this season. It scared me to feel this way and I felt mournful, like I had just started growing my business and working more jobs, just to now have to give it up because I couldn’t do this.

So how does one overcome imposter syndrome?
Well it typically involves changing one’s mindset about their own abilities and staying focused on measuring your own achievements, instead of comparing yourself to others.

This past Sunday I taught a class in the park and was feeling so unconfident, I asked for my friends and fellow yoga teachers to give me feedback, expecting them to maybe say a few nice things, but ultimately say that I had a lot to work on. But I was quite surprised when all of them commented positive things and were so impressed with how I’ve grown as a teacher. They were all shocked to find out that I had been feeling imposter syndrome for the last week.

After that four different people told me that I was so inspiring to them for all that I have done in the last 3.5 months since graduating. I’m thankful that I’ve been able to help others on their journey and for their kindness, but I think the biggest impact was my prayer to God for confidence and to rid me of the fear that was overwhelming me.

I’m so thankful to announce that I no longer have imposter syndrome or fear looming over me. But I know that others may be facing this battle or have been for a long time. If this resonates with you know that I get it, i'm here for you and i'm rooting for you as you overcome this.
