What is Ayurveda

What is it?
One of the oldest medical practices in the world from a holistic approach.

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word meaning “Science of life”. The underlying belief is that everything in life is connected; The mind, physical body, soul, and senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste).Because of this health and wellness rely on reaching balance and harmony.

This world operates in rhythm-the cycles of the sun, moon, tide, seasons- and so do we. With all the artificial things of this world, social media, and busy schedules, it’s easy to get out of sync.

How does this relate to yoga?
Yoga and Ayurveda stem from the same philosophical beliefs and share the same goal of creating balance and harmony in all things. The philosophy of yoga provides a pathway for navigating the mind/body towards an understanding of itself. The science of Ayurveda focuses primarily on maintaining the physical body, but the link between consciousness and health is clear. Yoga movements and breathing techniques may be employed by Ayurveda to stimulate organs or organ systems or to ease stress.

In Ayurveda, our anatomy starts with the 5 elements: space, earth, air, fire, and water. The elements create 3 compounds that govern specific functions and energies in the body. When these compounds, known as Doshas, are in balance we will experience smooth moving processes (digestion, circulation, etc.), clear senses, proper elimination, and happiness.

There are 3 doshas, known as Vata, Pitta, Kapha, that can do good or ill, depending on whether they are in a relative state of balance or not.

In order to keep balance we must know our primary Dosha and the current season we’re in (fall, summer, winter, spring). This knowledge will lead us to what foods we should eat, what types of exercises we should do, and what kind of self care routines we need for ourselves.

I have done an Ayurvedic cleanse several times before and have found that it was helpful in clearing my mind and correcting some digestive issues that I had. It also helped me to form healthier self care habits such as tongue scraping, oil pulling, and massage.

Let's put our health first! 😊
